No passport? No problem.

Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the USVI -- which one is right for your family?

I love international travel. I think every American family should have a passport and use it.

But I also think we overlook something remarkable.

The U.S. has island paradises you can reach without a passport, without customs, without currency exchange. Just board a plane and land somewhere beautiful.

And yet -- most families default to Florida.

Today we fix that.

Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are three completely different experiences. The trick is knowing which one fits your family, your budget, and where you live.

HAWAII

Best for: West Coast families, nature lovers, bucket list trips

Hawaii is the gold standard for a reason. Volcanic craters, sea turtles, cliffs that look like they belong in a movie (because they do -- Jurassic Park was filmed on Kauai).

My island ranking for families: Kauai first, Maui second, Big Island third, Oahu last. Most people go to Oahu by default. Don't. Kauai has the best scenery in the state, far fewer crowds, and beaches like Poipu and Hanalei Bay that are genuinely great for kids. Maui has the best all-around resort experience. The Big Island is for families who want something different -- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is unlike anything else on earth.

Flights: Nonstop from LAX, SFO, and PHX to Maui (OGG) or Kauai (LIH) run about 5-6 hours. Use Google Flights with the nonstop filter and compare OGG, LIH, and KOA separately -- prices vary a lot by island. For Midwest and East Coast families, you'll connect, but a longer trip makes it worth it.

Budget: Plan $7,000-10,000 for a family of four for one week. Hotels in Maui average $300-500 per night in June.

Best time in June: Kauai's North Shore calms down significantly in summer -- Hanalei Bay becomes swimmable for kids. Great timing overall.

Hotel vs. rental: Go vacation rental on Maui or Kauai. A kitchen saves you $50-100 per day on food and makes the trip feel less like a resort conveyor belt.

PUERTO RICO

Best for: East Coast and Midwest families, budget-conscious travelers, first-time tropical trips

Puerto Rico is the most underrated destination in this comparison.

500-year-old Spanish forts in Old San Juan. El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, where you can hike to waterfall swimming holes. Three of the world's five bioluminescent bays, where the water glows neon blue at night. And a food scene that punches way above its weight.

Flights: If you live east of Denver, Puerto Rico is almost always the smarter flight. Nonstop routes from Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, and Charlotte land in San Juan (SJU) in 4-5 hours. Fares are often under $300 round trip.

Budget: A family of four can do a great week for $4,000-6,000. Hotels in San Juan run $150-250 per night in June.

One heads up on El Yunque: reservations are now required and morning slots sell out fast. Book your entry as soon as your dates are set.

Best time in June: Early June works well. Hurricane season officially starts June 1 but early June is typically fine. Book travel insurance and keep an eye on forecasts.

Hotel vs. rental: Stay in Old San Juan for the first few nights -- walkable to the forts and the best restaurants. Then rent a house near Luquillo or Rincon for the beach portion.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Best for: Families who want a true "disappear from everything" Caribbean feel

The USVI is the most underrated of the three. Most people have never seriously considered it. That's exactly why you should go.

St. Thomas has Magens Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. St. John is a 20-minute ferry ride away -- two thirds of the island is a U.S. National Park. The beaches, particularly Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay, are postcard material. The snorkeling is world-class. The crowds are a fraction of Hawaii or San Juan.

Flights: Nonstop service runs from Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and D.C. Southwest launched new nonstop routes from Baltimore and Orlando in 2026 -- great news for affordability. West Coast travelers will connect, typically through Miami or Atlanta.

Budget: The priciest of the three. Plan $6,000-9,000 for a family of four for a week.

Best time in June: Early June is generally fine. Book travel insurance.

Hotel vs. rental: St. Thomas, go resort. St. John, rent a villa. The hilltop villas overlooking Cruz Bay are some of the best vacation rental experiences in the entire Caribbean -- and you're steps from National Park trails.

Plan your trip at the official USVI tourism site. For St. John ferry info, check Inter Island Boat Services.

THE HONEST ANSWER

West Coast family? Hawaii. Short nonstop, unmatched experience.

East Coast or Midwest on a budget? Puerto Rico. Best value in this comparison by a mile.

Want to feel like you found something most people haven't? USVI. Go before everyone catches on.

And look -- I'll always push you toward international travel when you're ready. Japan, Portugal, Ireland -- those trips rewire how you see the world. But these three are a great place to start.

The world is bigger than Florida.
